Hydraulic cylinders are used in a wide range of applications and environments and are frequently exposed to dust, debris, and all kinds of weather conditions. To block contaminants from infiltrating the cylinder assembly and hydraulic system, wiper rings—also referred to as scrapers, excluders, or dust seals—are positioned on the exterior side of the cylinder head.
Wiper rings maintain surface contact with the piston rod both when the equipment is at rest (static, with no rod movement) and when it is active (dynamic, with reciprocating movement). In the absence of wiper rings, contaminants can be drawn into the cylinder by the retracting piston rod. Furthermore, the static outer diameter of the wiper ring within the housing is also essential to prevent moisture and particles from bypassing the seal.
Because hydraulic systems operate in varied conditions, wiper rings are key to preventing contaminants from entering the cylinders and help ensure the equipment remains operable and efficient.
